Gessner & Platt Law Offices have been part of Cortland since 1958 when John F. Gessner and Robert M. Platt, Sr., both of whom were admitted to the Ohio State Bar in 1954, partnered to create the firm that continues today as Gessner & Platt Co., L.P.A. at 212 W. Main Street, in Cortland. The partners' sons, George E. Gessner and Robert M. Platt, Jr. joined the firm in 1969 and 1974 respectively as their fathers retired and continued the business together until George's passing in 2019, However, the firm continues to pay greatest respect to the founders and members who have passed away by holding to the high standards set by them. It is with this expectation that Attorney Robert M. Platt, Jr. is pleased to announce a new addition to the law firm, Michael P. Walton, Attorney at Law.

In an interview with the Cortland News to introduce the new lawyer, Rob Platt explained that it took almost two years after George's passing to choose someone to become part of the team. "I was looking for someone with experience, knowledge and a pleasant personality in keeping with our office," Platt said he was pleased that Michael also likes the history of the firm. "He chose to decorate his office with certificates, photos and even the fountain pens from his predecessors as a nod to the past." Of course, the rest of his office space holds the most up to date office equipment as possible. this is 2022! Office paralegal, Leni Peckich added that "I believe Michael is a good fit and he truly wants to blend into Cortland life. I appreciate the respect and honor he has shown for the Gessners and Platts,"

Michael P. Walton is an attorney, licensed to practice in the state of Ohio and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. A general practitioner with extensive experience in Juvenile Defense, Domestic Relations and Appellate Litigation, Michael is also the public defender for the Trumbull County Central District Court in Cortland.

Mr. Walton graduated from Mineral Ridge High School. He received his bachelor's degree from Hiram College where he was a member of the men's golf team and studied under the mentorship of the esteemed political commentator Dr. Jason Johnson. Attending law school at Ohio Northern University, in Ada, Ohio, Michael was involved with the school's free legal clinic and recognized at national competition for his advocacy skills and brief-writing abilities.

As a lawyer Michael has continued to hone his legal skills and give back time. He is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association, where he was selected to participate in their Leadership Academy and volunteers annually as a judge for Capital Law School's National Moot Court Competition in Child Welfare & Adoption Law. He is also a member of the Trumbull County Bar Association. His areas of practice include: Domestic Relations - Family Law, Criminal Defense and Appeals and Post-Conviction, Probate and Real Estate, Traffic Offenses including OVI.

Mr. Walton is a long-time resident of the area, and currently lives in Warren with his wife Stephanie, a teacher at LaBrae local schools, and their 18-month old daughter, Parker Rose.
